Alcohol and Exercise
This just in from Astute Reader Dexter, our man-not-on-the-beach in Hawaii. As a one-woman walking/talking guinea pig, I concur. (I drink alcohol every day and exercise five to six days a week.) (Currently dealing with a truly nasty case of swimmer’s elbow, I might add.) (No! Not drinking elbow. Swimmer’s elbow.)

I have to sound off on this one, Maureen. If people want to drink, that’s fine, but don’t try to fob it off as being “healthy.” There is far more evidence that consuming alcohol is bad for you than good for you. What about those brain cells that are dying? What about the damage to the liver? Increased risk of heart disease? Not to mention that it’s just dumping a bunch of sugar into your system, most likely to get stored as fat, adding to the national obesity epidemic? Oh, I almost forgot… deaths and injuries due to drunk driving? I don’t drink at all (Nope, never. Gave it up when I changed my diet a year and a half ago and don’t miss it at all.) And I exercise seven days a week, so I’m not sure I see the correlation between drinking and exercise. Maybe that was a skewed sample? I would bet with a bit of digging, we would find that other factors besides drinking have a much higher correlation to the daily exercise statistic. In any case, just an opinion from the teetotalling opposition.
I gather the tongue in my cheek was not obvious (due, no doubt, to sloppy writing on my part…)Obviously, alcohol is not healthy in excess. But what is? And I don’t think anyone is suggesting that drinking offers a one-for-one exchange for exercise.Or, for that matter, that somehow a “healthy” lifestyle MUST include alcohol. But, hey, I could be wrong….
